The importance of exfoliation
One of the reasons youthful skin looks so youthful is that is has a high rate of skin cell turnover. This means skin cells tend to die and be sloughed off far quicker than the skin cells of older people. Skin that has a higher rate of turnover appears glowing, while older and dead skin cells on the face give it a dull, grey appearance.
That is why as you get older it is even more important to maintain a good exfoliation regime. For real results, choose a skin care product that includes either alpha-hydroxy-acids (AHA’s) or retinol, both of which will encourage skin cell renewal and will therefore help to maintain a more youthful appearance.
Both of these ingredients do not work by physically scraping off the skin cells as an exfoliation glove or scrub would do. Instead, they send messages to the skin cell itself to turn over at a higher rate and retain moisture.
